29/6/17 Explanation evidence of learning.

29/6/17 Explanation evidence of learning.

Throughout the last few weeks, we have been looking at explanations. We were then asked to create an explanation on one of four questions: what is energy? Have scientists discovered all type of energy? Can energy run out? And how is energy important in the everyday lives of people? Because I wanted to be unique I chose ‘have scientists discovered all types of energy. It just appealed to me, it was just a bonus that I was the only person to choose it.

As it turned out I altered the idea to have we discovered all sources of energy because I instantly had ideas. I got to work crafting my explanation. I really enjoyed looking at dark energy and harnessing it. Dark energy is a force that takes up 67.8% of the universe and has the power to rip holes the size of starships in space-time itself. It would potentially create star trek (not star wars they just travel at the speed of light)(yes I am a nerd).in real life, imagine that. There are still some things I have to do  ( I made some dumb mistakes). Amy has set us one more task for the term being writing another explanation but this time on whatever I want. I think  I’ll either do it on dark energy or Spinosaurus Egypticus.

26/6/17 Our material world Immersion evidence of learning

26/6/17 Our material world Immersion evidence of learning

For this Immersion, we have been looking at the material world. Not clothing material but molecules. We have looked at different types of energy, what they fuel and how they form, eg: Chemical energy which is the energy that is stored inside molecules and atoms and It fuels living things. We have also looked at physical and chemical changes. A chemical change is a change that alters something chemical make-up an example would be rusting iron. Physical changes are changes that affect the chemical form but not the makeup they are also reversible.

FullSizeRender.jpgWe have conducted multiple experiments throughout this immersion. The most recent being the oxygen/fire fair test (although we have started a new one around galvanizing nails with a homemade recipe). We haven’t concluded data though). This tests if fire needs air to stay lit. You have to have 3 glasses of different sizes and three tealight candles. You light one candle and cover with the cup and of course you need to time it precisely. You do this for each glass 3 times. This will give you a good representation of how long each candle will take to burn out. My hypothesis was that the bigger glass will last the longest because fire needs three things to burn, heat, fuel, and oxygen. A flame without any of them will not burn.It is probably best to represent your results in a bar graph. My results are as follow.

As my hypothesis suggested the large glass was much higher than the others at an average of 58 seconds (the individual counts were 58, 59 and 57 seconds) the small and medium glasses were a lot less because of less oxygen.

12/6/17 Sewing evidence of learning

12/6/17 Sewing evidence of learning

For me the last 3 weeks have been my first experience/s with a sewing machine. For me, all I wanted to make was a Tyrannosaurus Plush... cause dinosaurs. Before we could start on prototypes and tests we had to make a plan. For that I ran to the internet for help. The internet helped me and from that I got a good idea of what I wanted my rex to look like. It would be a fat smallish design that would be red and orange.

Using the machines was next. It wasn’t particularly complicated  and I got the hang of it quickly. As of now I am working on  a better design that would allow me to stuff it and then prototyping it with flexi-fabric (a fabric that can be cut, glued, machine sewed, hand sewed and a bunch of other things). It seems to me I have to get the tail fatter so I can get stuffing in. I’m hoping to perfect the design this week and start making the real thing.

7/6/17 Chess matchstick tournament Evidence of learning

7/6/17 Chess matchstick tournament Evidence of learning

Last Friday Felicity held a chess matchstick tournament. A matchstick tournament is when you are given 3 matchsticks at the beginning of the tournament. Each time you played someone if you came out the victor you would get one of their matchstick and vice versa. You could only play a person with the same number of matchsticks. If you ran out of matchsticks you exit the tournament.  Them person with the most matchsticks at the end of the tournament won.

My first match was against Barnabas and went for about 30 minutes. He put me in a lot of checks and blocked me from any checks eventually I broke through and checkmated. My second opponent was Saxon and I got wiped out, within 10 moves it was checkmate. My third opponent was Radha. This was a closer game with me being very offensive but a few dumb moves later and it was checkmate for me. My final opponent was Zoe, sadly the match could not continue as we had to end the tournament. At the time I was set to strike and had taken a horse and only lost a pawn.
